I have a severe nut allergy, which greatly impacted my childhood. Living with food allergies in a world where many social interactions involve food is a challenging reality. It can feel quite limiting and even isolating as a child, so instead of social gatherings, I found comfort in writing. I write characters I would want to befriend and I create adventures I would like to embark on. When I was seven, I created an alter ego called Allergy Aubree who was a superhero with a nut allergy. This superhero interacted normally with her peers, attended school and lived a normal life. In my imagination, I used superheroes as a metaphor because for me, living normally as a food allergy kid is a super power in itself, and superpowers don’t exist. However, I want to be the voice for young aspiring authors and food allergy kids, because success is possible, regardless of your food allergy.
